Michigan has more than 3,600 traditional public schools in 553 districts serving the communities in which they are located.  The traditional public school system includes magnet schools (specializing in subjects such as science or the arts, or offering approaches such as open classrooms or Montessori).  Some traditional schools also offer intra-district choice, which allows parents to enroll their children in any of the district's schools, or inter-district choice, which allows parents to enroll in neighboring districts.

To find out more about traditional schools in your area, do an online search of the individual district names.  Many districts have their own Web sites.  To find out more about intra- or inter-district choice, do an Internet search by typing in your county's name and "intermediate school district."  Most ISDs have information about the choice policies of their member schools.

For more information on Michigan's traditional public schools, visit the web sites of GREAT SCHOOLS or SchoolMatters, a service of Standard & Poor's.
